The key topics for discussion were:
– strategy of Green Belt of Fennoscandia (GBF) development as a holistic transboundary ecological-economic space;
– sustainable functioning of natural ecosystems and sane nature management in GBF;
– preparation of the concept for the development of the GBF tourism and recreation sector (centered around protected areas and other pieces of natural, cultural and mining heritage);
– utilization of GBF elements for environmental education.
Green Belt of Fennoscandia (GBF) is a unique natural area, 1350 km long and 50 km wide, composed of large expanses of forest, mires and lake-river systems on both sides of the borders between Russia, Finland and Norway. GBF fulfills the ecological, conservation and recreational criteria for pan-European significance, and represents the northern part of the European Green Belt. GBF in Karelia comprises the largest borderland protected areas.
Vice President of the Kola Science Centre RAS Vladimir Masloboev told about the possibilities offered by protected areas, and about the ways for their socio-economic development.
Leading Researcher of the Forest Research Institute KarRC RAS Aleksey Kravchenko informed the participants about the challenges and pressing needs of the Ladoga Skerries National Park.
Aimo Saano from the Finnish Metsähallitus told about the matters of concern for the neighbors of Karelia in relation to active tourism development in the Green Belt of Fennoscandia.
On its second day, the workshop “Development of the Green Belt of Fennoscandia: environment, economy, education” moved to a new venue in Ladozhskaya Usadba resort in Sortavalsky District, Republic of Karelia.

Starting November 13–18, the 7th BRICS International School takes place in Moscow. Its participants are graduate and post-graduate students and young specialists from countries of the alliance. The event is organized by the Russian National Committee on BRICS Research with support from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund, and Presidential Grants Fund. Specialists from the Northern Water Problems Institute KarRC RAS and Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences presented their studies and identified areas of common scientific interest for joint projects.

Scientists from Karelia and China discuss plans for joint research of water bodies. A delegation from the Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is on a working visit to KarRC RAS. The researchers are focusing on climate change, human impact on the natural environment and other topics and areas common to Russia and China.
