Speakers and facilitators of roundtable sessions emphasized the importance of implementing international projects and raising funds on top of the state budget for Russian regions, namely the Republic of Karelia.

Especially highlighted at the sessions was the role of science in project activities – a majority of the projects presented incorporate a research component, which often helps demonstrate the potential contained in the project idea and its practical applications, and acts as a conductor of scientific and people’s diplomacy. Roundtable participants also stressed the importance of involving regions of the countries participating in project activities, including border regions, in the process of defining the priorities for forthcoming Russia-EU cooperation programmes.

The event was attended by V.N. Pivnenko, Russian National Parliament Member for the Republic of Karelia.

Concluding the roundtable, the Cooperation Agreement was signed between the Karelian Research Centre RAS and the Kolmas Karelia company (representing Ruskeala Mining Park). The document concentrates on cooperation for conducting research at the Ruskeala Mining Park, using the park as an experimental research facility for studying security issues of using underground spaces in tourism, development of methods for controlling the stability of mines and elucidation of the effects of tourist traffic on the environment.

KarRC RAS is grateful to the Leontief Centre for the invitation to take part in the Forum this year.
