Scientific conference Precambrian Summit-2025 to take place in Petrozavodsk

The geological conference Precambrian Summit-2025 will be held at the Karelian Research Centre RAS on August 11 to 17. During this conference, organized by the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS, scientists will share expertise and discuss the results of their recent studies on the early history of the Earth.
It’s the 8th conference in the series held at the Institute of Geology. Specialists from around Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Voronezh, Irkutsk, Novosibirsk) and from abroad will participate. The program includes a talk by colleagues from India, and scientists from South Africa, India, USA will join online.

- Our territory is at the origin of Precambrian geology. Studies of our region have given rise to most discoveries that underpin the understanding of this epoch. Key sites of global significance are situated here. The territory remains of crucial importance for Mesoarchean studies – investigating the history of the planet’s evolution between 2.8-3 Ga and 1.8 Ga B.P. – explained Alexander Slabunov, KarRC RAS Deputy Director General, Head of Precambrian Geology and Geodynamics Laboratory of the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS, and Chairperson of the Conference Organizing Committee.

The conference will feature both oral and poster presentations. Another venue in addition to the Institute of Geology will be in Yalgora, a suburb of Petrozavodsk. A Field trip for the conference participants will be conducted from August 14th to 17th to showcase Early Precambrian rock sequences in the western and central Karelian Craton, including the Kostomuksha, Khedozero-Bolsheozero, Gimoly, and Vedlozero-Segozero greenstone belts, as well as the Kostomuksha – Sukkozero – Vottavaara – Girvas traverse.

The last time KarRC RAS hosted a conference on ancient history of the Earth, “Early Precambrian Geology and Geodynamics: Similarities and Distinctions versus the Phanerozoic”, was in 2022.

Full program and proceedings are available on the Institute of Geology website.
