Fifth international workshop on stochastic modeling and applied research launched at the KarRC RAS

The Institute of Applied Mathematical Research of the Karelian Research Centre RAS (IAMR KarRC RAS) is hosting the Fifth International Workshop on Stochastic Modeling and Applied Research in Technology: SMARTY 2026. The workshop is an important event within the International Academic Forum "Science Beyond Borders: Interdisciplinary Scientific Cooperation", dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Karelian Research Centre RAS.
One of the first events within this year's largest scientific gathering in Karelia – KarRC RAS 80th anniversary International Academic Forum "Science Beyond Borders: Interdisciplinary Scientific Cooperation" is the 5th International Workshop on Stochastic Modeling and Applied Research in Technology (SMARTY 2026).

The audience was addresses with welcoming speeches by Igor A. Sokolov, RAS Academician, Professor, Dean of the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics at Lomonosov Moscow State University, and Research Leader of the Computer Science and Control Federal Research Center RAS; Anna N. Rettieva, Director of the Institute of Applied Mathematical Research KarRC RAS; Marina S. Gvozdeva, Head of the Directorate for International Relations at Petrozavodsk State University (PetrSU); and Achyutha Krishnamoorthy, Honorary Director of the Center for Research in Mathematics at CMS College Kottayam (India).

RAS Academician Igor Sokolov

In his speech, Academician Igor Sokolov highlighted the fact that, in his estimation, the queuing theory is currently given insufficient attention although this is a domain that helps build modern information and computing systems. Therefore, focusing on this topic at the workshop is the right thing to do.

-- I urge everyone participating in the workshop to pay close attention to the practical tools of the queuing theory and to work in this direction, -- said Academician Igor Sokolov wrapping up his address.

Alexander Rumyantsev, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics

Alexander Rumyantsev, Secretary of the Workshop Organizing Committee and Head of the Laboratory for Stochastic Modeling of Information, Computing, and Telecommunication Systems at IAMR KarRC RAS, shared the history of the event. SMARTY was first organized in 2018 at the initiative of the IAMR, the Institute of Mathematics and Information Technologies of the Petrozavodsk University, and CMS College Kottayam (India). Later on, the workshop was also supported by other academic partners, including the Computer Science and Control Federal Research Center.

The SMARTY Youth School is held annually, while the international workshop itself is biennial. The workshop brings together researchers from Russian research teams dealing with stochastic modeling and queuing theory. In Russia, this scientific field has historically been developed in cities such as Moscow, Tomsk, Novosibirsk, St. Petersburg, and Petrozavodsk.

More than 50 scientists from over ten countries – including Russia, the USA, Japan, India, Kazakhstan, the Czech Republic, and the UK – are participating either in person or online. There are early-career researchers, including doctoral and Master's students, as well as renowned scientists. Yet, as Alexander Rumyantsev emphasized, the workshop maintains a democratic and friendly atmosphere for professional communication, without a clear divide between senior and junior colleagues. This is largely because the program is made so that the presentations, discussion topics and lectures are engaging for everyone. Furthermore, due to the absence of a conference fee and the option to participate online, the workshop is very open for any interested specialists.

This year's workshop stands out for its exceptionally broad thematic scope. It encompasses in-depth theoretical studies as well as research geared toward practical applications, such as next-generation communication networks, including 6G.

-- This is state-of-the-art technology, which our colleagues also strive to study, -- remarked Alexander Rumyantsev.

In some cases, we focus on a specific area. For instance, some of the previous workshops dealt with the analysis of system robustness or modern domains like quantum computing. This year, our thematic spectrum is extremely broad and diverse, -- the organizers stated.

Historically, all SMARTY workshops have a five-day duration. This year, the main agenda will be covered in three days. The fourth day will be dedicated to the memory of outstanding scholar, RAS Academician Alexander A. Borovkov, honoring his contribution to the development of the queuing theory, and only invited speakers will present on this day.

The final day, as always, will be dedicated to the youth. It is tailored for young scientists, Doctoral and Master's students, with the format combining four lectures and a roundtable.
