Representatives of KarRC RAS took part in the International Workshop on Arctic Marine Environment Research Co-operation in the Barents Region, which took place on April 18-19 at the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) in Helsinki, Finland.
The aim of the workshop was to share information about ongoing projects and identify new initiatives in the sphere of Arctic marine environment research in the Barents Region put forward by partners from Russia, Finland, Norway, and Sweden.

Climate change and multiple human-induced stressors threatening the Arctic marine environment call for innovative and integrated international research co-operation for sustainable development of the region. The participants mapped the foundations and donor organizations that could potentially provide funding for new projects in 2018-2019.

The forum gathered representatives of scientific organizations, environmental centers, authorities, and NGOs. The agenda included the plenary session “Examples of cooperation in the Barents Region”, and group discussions on the following themes:
- Biodiversity and climate change in the Barents Region;
- Human activities, pressures and cumulative impacts to marine environment, including oil and hazardous substances;
- Ecosystem approach in Maritime Spatial Planning.

KarRC RAS was represented in the discussions of project initiatives by the Head of the Laboratory of Plant and Animal Parasitology (Institute of Biology) E.P. Ieshko, Head of the Laboratory of Fish and Aquatic Invertebrates Ecology (IB) N.V. Ilmast, Researcher at the Department for Regional Economic Policy (Institute of Economics) S.V. Stepanova, as well as Head of the Department for International Cooperation P.V. Petrov.
