In October 2018, the Memorandum on co-operation between Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Finnish Environment Institute (Helsinki) was signed. The Memorandum will be in force for 5 years.
The Parties have agreed to assist the development of joint scientific research, sharing of scientific data, as well as initiation and implementation of joint research projects and programmes addressing issues of environmental protection, biodiversity studies, anthropogenic impacts on northern ecosystems and other areas of mutual interest.

Co-operation between the Parties shall take the following forms: development of the network of scientific organizations and specialists; implementation of joint studies; researcher and information exchanges; organization and implementation of joint conferences, symposia and seminars; joint scientific publications.

Specific joint research projects and activities shall be specified in Action plans and drawn up as specific Contracts for each project.

This Memorandum is based on the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Finland and the Government of the Russian Federation on cooperation in the field of environmental protection dated April 29th 1992 and on the trilateral Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of the Environment of the Republic of Finland, the Ministry of the Environment of the Kingdom of Norway, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation on cooperation on the development of the Green Belt of Fennoscandia (February 17th 2010, Tromso, Norway).

Starting November 13–18, the 7th BRICS International School takes place in Moscow. Its participants are graduate and post-graduate students and young specialists from countries of the alliance. The event is organized by the Russian National Committee on BRICS Research with support from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund, and Presidential Grants Fund. KarRC RAS takes part in the school for the second time.

The international seminar “Cooperation on climate change research, environmental monitoring and modeling” completed in Petrozavodsk. Specialists from the Northern Water Problems Institute KarRC RAS and Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences presented their studies and identified areas of common scientific interest for joint projects.

Scientists from Karelia and China discuss plans for joint research of water bodies. A delegation from the Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is on a working visit to KarRC RAS. The researchers are focusing on climate change, human impact on the natural environment and other topics and areas common to Russia and China.
