On September 9-11, 2019 the workshop “Invasive alien species and data collaboration” within the international project “Collaborative Data and Information Exchange Network for Managing Invasive Alien Species - DIAS” took place in Petrozavodsk.
Presentations were made about the DIAS project, the Finnish invasive species data web portal, Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). Representatives of GBIF Secretariat (Copenhagan, Denmark) and specialists from the Komi Scientific Centre of the RAS Ural Branch and Yugra State University (Khanty-Mansiysk) offered practical training on working with invasive species databases. In addition to lectures and practical training, upcoming project activities were discussed.

DIAS project is implemented within the Karelia Cross-border Cooperation Programme financed by the European Union, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Finland. Project partners, along with KarRC RAS, are Finnish Environment Institute, SYKE (Lead Partner) and Natural Resources Institute Finland, LUKE.
The aim of the project is to develop expertise on issues associated with invasive alien species and the methods to control them, as well as to raise awareness among communities, authorities and any relevant stakeholders on both sides of the border.

Starting November 13–18, the 7th BRICS International School takes place in Moscow. Its participants are graduate and post-graduate students and young specialists from countries of the alliance. The event is organized by the Russian National Committee on BRICS Research with support from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund, and Presidential Grants Fund. KarRC RAS takes part in the school for the second time.

The international seminar “Cooperation on climate change research, environmental monitoring and modeling” completed in Petrozavodsk. Specialists from the Northern Water Problems Institute KarRC RAS and Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences presented their studies and identified areas of common scientific interest for joint projects.

Scientists from Karelia and China discuss plans for joint research of water bodies. A delegation from the Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is on a working visit to KarRC RAS. The researchers are focusing on climate change, human impact on the natural environment and other topics and areas common to Russia and China.
