Senior Researcher at the Laboratory for Landscape Ecology and Forest Ecosystem Protection of the Forest Research Institute KarRC RAS Aleksey Polevoi tells about invasive insects.
There are plant and animal species in the Republic of Karelia that have been present in the territory for quite a while. We can call them natives. They are the ones that define what our republic looks like. At the same time, there are alien species that have arrived from other regions. Those alien species whose spread threatens the native flora and fauna, as well as human health and lives, or has adverse effects on the region’s environment or economy are tagged as invasive. Our new post will introduce people living in Karelia to invasive insects. Our guide in this challenging task is Aleksey Polevoi, Senior Researcher at the Laboratory for Landscape Ecology and Forest Ecosystem Protection of the Forest Research Institute KarRC RAS. Aleksey has been studying insects in Karelia for years.

Be reminded that if you’ve spotted invasive species in Karelia, this finding can be reported to scientists at the Karelian Research Centre RAS by visiting https://dias.krc.karelia.ru/feedback
