During his visit to Finland on November 6-9, 2011 KarRC of RAS President A.F. Titov had talks with the administration of the Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT). Working meetings took place with representatives of the main faculties and some structural units of the University. E.g, talks were held at the Northern Dimension Research Centre (NORDI), which coordinates the University's Russia-related studies and activities. One of the meetings was with leaders of the South Karelia Institute, which specializes in research into the social processes, cultural and environmental issues in border areas, namely in South Karelia and the Karelian Isthmus. Questions of collaboration within the Northern Dimension Institute – an open network of universities and research institutions meant to provide scientific support to implementation of the EU Northern Dimension policy – were discussed.
Potential spheres of joint activities and specific project initiatives to be promoted as applications to various international cooperation programmes (EU 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development, Cross-border Cooperation within the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument, etc.) were discussed during the talks.
The parties have agreed the projects at the first stages shall focus on the development of regional energy systems, including renewable energy sources; development of environmental management and monitoring systems for large infrastructural projects; creation of the biotechnology cluster at the White Sea (linked to the relevant Republic of Karelia regional programme); working out of environmentally balanced transport development programmes.
The decision was made to continue collaboration with the Northern Dimension Institute within its “Transport and Logistics” and “Energy and Environment” thematic groups.
The parties have also recognized good potential for cooperation in areas such as research into water management and water treatment; forest research; studies dealing with the Finnish and Karelian languages and culture, environment, cultural anthropology, history and culture.
The agreement about signing the Memorandum of Understanding was reached at the meeting with the Rector of the University.
To summarize, the many meetings have demonstrated that the Finnish counterpart is still highly interested in the work of Russian scientists and willing to implement joint activities.
