Starting November 13–18, the 7th BRICS International School takes place in Moscow. Its participants are graduate and post-graduate students and young specialists from countries of the alliance. The event is organized by the Russian National Committee on BRICS Research with support from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund, and Presidential Grants Fund. KarRC RAS takes part in the school for the second time.
The BRICS International School in Moscow this week gathered graduate and post-graduate students, young specialists and experts from Russia, Brazil, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Colombia, Argentina, Honduras, Morocco, Belarus. The scientific and educational program of the school is packed with presentations, panel discussions, lectorials and master classes intended to promote international business relations, discuss potential projects between the countries of the interstate alliance in the spheres of technology, energy, biotechnology and other scientific fields.

A delegation from the Karelian Research Centre RAS prepared and conducted a lectorial on raising the role of young researchers in the development of science. What can the world give to young scientists, and what in turn can the scientific youth offer to the world? This was the subject of the presentation by the Head of the KarRC RAS Department for International Cooperation Pavel Petrov.

Young scientists are the driving force of the society. Their major advantage is the rapid mastery of new technologies and exploration of new fields of research, flexibility of mind, initiation of change and search for innovative solutions in science.

— The lecture provoked a lively discussion. Participants from different BRICS countries shared their opinions on the problems and prospects of young scientists. The Chinese spoke about high competition between researchers, PhD students from Brazil - about the lack of funding for publications and housing issues. In our country, it is obvious that the state recognizes the role of young scientists and tries to support them. Young researchers get incentive bonuses on top of their salaries, and the number of grants from the President, the Russian Government, and scientific foundations aimed at supporting young specialists is growing. Besides, candidates of sciences under the age of 35 can receive housing certificates in our country. Russian scientific journals provide doctoral students with the opportunity to publish scientific articles free of charge, — shared Pavel Petrov, Head of the KarRC RAS Department for International Cooperation.

Another speaker in the lectorial was Anastasia Bykova, Doctoral Student, Junior Researcher at the Department for Regional Institutional Development of the Institute of Economics KarRC RAS. Last year she was a participant of the BRICS school, and this year, now in the capacity of an expert, she shared her experience as a young scientist and gave advice on how to apply for grants and promote one's work.

The working week was concluded with a presentation of the best international practices of cooperation between youth organizations and associations of the BRICS countries. An own project for supporting young specialists was successfully presented by Irina Zaitseva, Leading Biologist, Doctoral Student at the Laboratory for Ecological Physiology of Animals, Institute of Biology KarRC RAS.

Another aspect discussed during the school days was the evolution of relationships between the BRICS countries and the goals of the Russian Chairmanship, which will start next year. The main events are going to be held in Kazan. The Karelian capital city may also become a venue for gathering the scientific association of the alliance's countries. We remind that this fall an international conference of the BRICS countries was held at KarRC RAS. Experts from different countries and fields of science discussed the problems of climate change, environmental safety, sustainable nature management and study of natural resources, green energy, development of ecotourism, and other important issues.

Mathematicians from Karelia and Italy find a new way to optimize quantum computing

Maria Makarova, a young mathematician from Petrozavodsk, completed her postgraduate studies at KarRC RAS and at the University of Trento, Italy. She now works at the intersection of mathematics and computer science in the field of quantum computing. Quantum computers represent the future, the foundations for which are being laid at this very moment, but as yet, these innovative devices are rather vulnerable: the physical features and the complexity of interactions among quantum particles lead to costly calculation errors. Scientists worldwide, including mathematicians from the Institute of Applied Mathematical Research KarRC RAS, are solving problems to optimize such computations.
