Fellows of the Russian Academy of Sciences have gathered in Karelia to discuss Arctic environmental issues
Events related to the external session of the RAS Scientific Council for Arctic and Antarctic Studies have started at the Karelian Research Centre RAS. In the coming two days, the country's leading scientists will discuss environmental problems of Russia's Arctic territories in different formats. In the run-up to the main agenda, journalists' questions were answered by Olga Bakhmet, KarRC RAS Director General, Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute, Anatoly Soloviev, Acting Chairman of the RAS Scientific Council for Arctic and Antarctic Studies, and Mikhail Slipechnuk, President of the Russian Association of Polar Explorers.

An external session of the RAS Scientific Council for Arctic and Antarctic Studies to take place in Petrozavodsk
A joint session of the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences for Arctic and Antarctic Studies and the Karelian Research Center RAS, and the conference “Environmental Problems of Arctic Territories” will take place in Petrozavodsk on April 24-25. The country's leading scientists will discuss the problems of climate change in the Arctic, issues on the environmental agenda, environmental protection laws and other topics.

KarRC RAS signs a Memorandum of Understanding with the Bundelkhand University, India
Karelian Research Center is furthering its cooperation with Indian colleagues. On March 18, a Memorandum of Understanding between KarRC RAS and Bundelkhand University was signed in the city of Jhansi. KarRC RAS was represented at the ceremony by Deputy Director General Alexander Slabunov, who has been cooperating with scientists from India in the field of geology for many years. The new agreement is designed to scale this experience to other fields as well: water and climate change research, biology, mathematics, economics.

January 29 completed the two-day session of the Learned Council of the Karelian Research Center RAS devoted to the results of its institutes' activities in 2024. The directors of the Institute of Applied Mathematical Research, Institute of Economics, Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History and the Head of the Department for Multidisciplinary Research delivered their reports.

Prospects for regional scientific cooperation within the BRICS Green Agenda framework were presented by Olga Bakhmet, Corresponding Academician, KarRC RAS Director General, at the International Conference “Greater Eurasia: national and civilizational aspects of development and cooperation”, which is taking place in Moscow on November 27-29.

On November 17-23, a delegation representing several units of the Karelian Research Center RAS visited scientific organizations of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Nanjing and Beijing. Together with Chinese colleagues, the scientists discussed topics for joint research and agreed to prepare applications for projects on the study of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Formal cooperation agreements are to be prepared with the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research and the Tibetan Plateau Research Institute CAS.

Regional cooperation of the BRICS countries in the sphere of ecology and nature management, as well as the results of a study of the environmental wellbeing of Arctic territories of European Russia were discussed at the Karelian Research Center RAS at the workshop “Integrated Development of Arctic Territories: Expert Opinion”. The event was organized on November 25 by the Department for Multidisciplinary Research KarRC RAS.
