The conference “Cities by the Water: New Design and New Opportunities” took place on February 14-15, 2013.
The conference summarized the results of the international project “Cities by the Water: New Opportunities for Business Development”, where the participants were the Karelian Research Centre, Petrozavodsk City Administration, Kizhi Museum Reserve, Sortavala City Administration, Josek and Keti Regional Development Agencies (Finland), etc.
The outputs of the project were the architectural concepts of the waterfront territories in Petrozavodsk and Joensuu, proposals for development of waterfront territories in Kitee and Sortavala, the marketing plan for the Petrozavodsk waterfront development, the Petrozavodsk City branding concept, as well as suggestions on the marketing of the Sortavala City.
The conference organizers were the Petrozavodsk City Administration, Karelian Research Centre, Union of Cities of Central and Northwest Russia (A. Vasiliev), Karelian Branch of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration.
Government bodies and local administrations of the Republic of Karelia, scientists and experts, NGOs, businesses were represented at the conference. Welcome speeches at the plenary session were made by the Head of the Petrozavodsk City Administration N. Levin, Executive Director of the Union of Cities of Central and Northwest Russia, Deputy Minister of Economic Development S. Manuilov.
Presentations at the plenary session on February 14th were made by the acting KarRC of RAS Vice President for Science Yuri Saveliev, Vice Director of the KarRC of RAS Institute of Economic Studies O. Tolstoguzov. The experience from the implementation of the Tübingen City Development Strategy was presented by the Mayor of the city B. Palmer (Germany). The results of the “Cities by the Water” project implementation were reported by the Vice Head of the Department of the Petrozavodsk City Administration N. Lavrushina.
Three thematic sessions (on marketing, experiences in waterfront development, and the role of business and community initiatives in marketing) were organized within the conference.

Starting November 13–18, the 7th BRICS International School takes place in Moscow. Its participants are graduate and post-graduate students and young specialists from countries of the alliance. The event is organized by the Russian National Committee on BRICS Research with support from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund, and Presidential Grants Fund. KarRC RAS takes part in the school for the second time.

The international seminar “Cooperation on climate change research, environmental monitoring and modeling” completed in Petrozavodsk. Specialists from the Northern Water Problems Institute KarRC RAS and Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences presented their studies and identified areas of common scientific interest for joint projects.

Scientists from Karelia and China discuss plans for joint research of water bodies. A delegation from the Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is on a working visit to KarRC RAS. The researchers are focusing on climate change, human impact on the natural environment and other topics and areas common to Russia and China.
